Hobos Pay A Visit

One story that always comes back to mind is when she was not much more than a toddler.  Papa lowry (her dad), his dad and his brother all worked on a dairy farm.  They didn’t own it but managed it.  Can’t remember the name right off.  Anyway, all the men were gone to work the dairy leaving nanny lowry and elma (grandma) at the house alone….nothing unusual, just another day in the life of a farmer.

There must have been two hobos watching the house as they knew Elma and Nanny were there.  Behind the house was a large creek with brush growing up the side of the bank.  Nanny seeing the men, scooped Elma up and took the path down by the creek and hid in the bushes.  I guess Nanny grabbed some tomatoes while sneaking out of the house to keep Elma quiet (snacking) while in hiding.

Nanny heard the men on the bank talking that they knew Nanny and Elma were there but they couldn’t find them.  They went through the house looking for what they could take.  I think she said papa had some change in his dirty overalls.  Once nanny felt safe, they left the creek bank and went in search of the men at the dairy.

I believe also after a time, Papa Lowry’s mother that came to live with them in that same house.  I remember grandma saying all she brought with her in the way of belongings were a set of dishes that had been handed down through the family.  Unfortunately the house at some time burned and everything was lost.  Everyone had gotten out safely.

!!!Can you add anything to this story?
